Storage facilities are designed with just-in-time requirements in mind. Consequently, warehouses, distribution centres and large retail businesses are among the most prized assets to fire protect from an operational standpoint. Technical faults in electrical equipment, switch cabinets and control cabinets, electric motors and the associated batteries, cooling arrays for frozen storage facilities, defrosters and welding and cutting work during repairs all increase the risk of fire.
According to the NFPA, the leading causes of fire in storage facilities are arson followed by electrical equipment (such as wiring, transformers, circuit breakers, control panels), followed by forklifts and finally chemical reactions between incompatible chemicals. Hot-shrink packaging films, pallets and irradiated goods can also cause a fire. These big-box facilities represent a unique fire challenge to both fire suppression engineers and the firefighters that are called upon to deal with a fire.
